Two German Silver Dinner Plates, one bearing date mark "y" for 1772, faint outline of maker's mark, and Dresden city mark; the other lacking or with rubbed hallmarks; each circular with a reeded rim, engraved to reverse with initials "FA" in a shield and below German Royal crown, further engraved with inventory numbers and scratch weights: "60/2.Mr. 12lt. 2q 1.d." and "226/2Mr: 12lt: --q: 1.d:"; each also bear a Dutch tax mark to rim, dia. 10 in., approx. 30.8 troy oz. N.B. The present plates appear to be a part of the so-called "Silver Service with FA in Shield" ordered in 1772 by Frederick Augustus III (1750-1827), Elector of Saxony. The initial order included 200 plates and was filled by the silversmith Carl David Schrödel. His hallmark resembles the outline of the maker's mark seen on the plate numbered "60." The service was then added to throughout the remainder of the 18th century by the widow and son of Carl David Schrödel, who died in 1773. A set of six plates from this service were sold at Christie's London, July 8, 2015, Sale 11670, Lot 146.
