James Casebere (American, b. 1953) Home and Prison , 1993, edition of 24 with 3 artists proofs published by 21 Steps Editions, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Prison unsigned, numbered "10/24" in pencil on the verso l.r. Two waterless lithographs on paper, image/sheet sizes 18 3/4 x 22 in. (47.6 x 55.9 cm), unmatted, framed. Condition: Floated within frames, deckled edges, Prison hinged at corners and sides with rice paper (hinges at bottom corners broken), Home not examined out of frame. N.B. James Casebere's photographic work has established him at the forefront of artists experimenting with constructed imagery. He was associated with the "Pictures Generation" of post-modern artists who emerged in the 1980s, which included Cindy Sherman, Robert Longo, Richard Prince, and others. Casebere creates two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional models that he builds in his studio and photographs using evocative lighting and suggestive angles to create worlds that blur fact and fiction. He is best known for his focus on institutional buildings, and, as evidenced in this Home and Prison pair of lithographs, his exploration of the fraught relationship between social structure and social control.
