One of five large-scale architectural renderings, hand-colored, for the Christopher Columbus Lighthouse Competition, mounted on wood, unsigned. Between the years 1928-30 some of the world's most celebrated architects came together to judge a competition for the proposed Columbus Memorial Lighthouse. Judges included Raymond Hood and Eliel Saarinen (who took first and second place in the Chicago Tribune Competition), Horacio Acosta y Lara, and later Frank Lloyd Wright. Joseph Lea Gleave won first place, but the lighthouse was not built until 1992. The present architectural plan, unattributed, includes a tall central tower, beneath which stands a five-domed building housing a full narthex with proposed murals (hand-colored), an elaborate altar, and large statue, signaling its use as a mausoleum for the explorer.
