Hand-colored engraved wall map of the Americas on four sheets, joined, title bordered with four vignettes, scale bar with fictitious scene from the discovery of the Americas, hand-colored tracts show the voyages of Columbus, Verrazzano, Magellan and Quiros, with explanatory text, numerous hand-colored ship scenes and fantastical sea monsters. A fine decorative wall map by the celebrated French cartographer, Jean-Baptiste Nolin. Dedicated to Louis XV, Nolin presents a commentary on European views of the New World, particularly surrounding the scale bar, where a group of Europeans are depicted coming upon Native Americans engaging in an act of cannibalism, specifically roasting a human head on an open fire, the body just to the right. Framed. Lacking border vignettes, which were issued on separate sheets; dampstaining to lower corners; two small tape repairs to the verso. 37 1/2 x 47 inches.
