Edinburgh: John Paterson, 1794. 4to, plain wraps, manuscript title to upper cover. First edition, with 30 (of 32) engraved plates and two engraved in-text vignettes. Executed by Bell himself, the drawings, especially of the muscles, represent a more realistic, if not morbid, style of anatomical illustration, with severed heads and flayed figures set upon operating tables and hung on hooks. Manuscript presentation inscription from previous owner to title page; bookplate and library card holder tipped to pastedowns; some light soiling to leaves.
