Separate stapled "Index to Subjects" laid into vol. 1. Both volumes inscribed in person by Susan B. Anthony with sentiments at the 1904 National American Woman Suffrage Association held in Washington, D.C. Inscription vol. 1 (to f.f.e.p., in blue pen): "Disfranchisement is not only POLITICAL DEGRADATION - but Social, Moral, Educational, Industrial and Civil degradation - as well - Sincerely yours Susan B. Anthony, Rochester - N.Y. Washington D.C. 1820. Feb. 15th - 1904." Inscription vol. 2 (to front blank, in blue pen): "PERFECT EQUALITY of RIGHTS FOR WOMEN - CIVIL AND POLITICAL - is the demand of yours sincerely - Susan B. Anthony, Rochester N.Y. Washington D.C. - Convention 1820 - Feb 15 - 1904." The set was originally owned by Oscar B. Hawes, a practicing Unitarian minister on the east coast, who was dedicated to the suffragette cause and was active in the progressive movement. The present set was signed in person by Susan B. Anthony when Mr. Hawes attended the 1904 National American Woman Suffrage Association convention in Washington D.C.
