Autographed letter signed, to Woodburn Potter, his Aid de Camp, who authored a first-hand account of Gaine's campaign against the Seminoles in Florida. 2 pp. Steam Boat Alton near Charlotte, Arkansas. March 8th, 1838. The majority concerns the care of his horses. In the last paragraph, Gaines states: "When you have done the sketch which you commenced, of my life up to the Battle of Fort Erie, send me a copy, and I will add to it an account of that Battle, and then send it to Mr. Longacre." Potter's most well-known book, , was first published in 1836, two years prior to the present letter. The Battle of Erie, wherein Gaines was awarded the Thanks of Congress Gold Medal (outranking the Congressional Medal of Honor), took place in 1814 in Canada.
