Illustrated by Eadweard Muybridge. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882. 4to, gilt lettered pictorial brown cloth, t.e.g., gilt titles to the spine. First edition. With 107 illustrations, including 105 drawings of horse anatomy and pacing and two heliotypes showing the arrangements of cameras. An early example of Muybridge's use of multiple cameras to capture motion, taking on the popularly debated question of whether all four of a horse's hooves left the ground at the same time in a gallop. Wear to the cloth; ends of spine bumped; hinges starting; otherwise interior is very fine.
