Sold for:
$17,920

A three-piece costume including a cotton button front shirt, black wool tuxedo jacket with tails, and a pair of wool, twill weave trousers with white stretch suspenders and a pair of distressed leather boots. The clothing is all intentionally oversized and distressed to help create Michael Jackson's homage to Charlie Chaplin's most famous character, the tramp. Jackson wore this costume during the 1994 shoot for the cover of his single "Smile." Jackson approached photographer Steve Whitsitt about what he wanted for the cover, explaining he wished to portray Charlie Chaplin and Jackie Coogan from Chaplin's film The Kid . The boots were created for the shoot but do not appear in the final images used for the cover of the single. The costume is sold together with a group of costume items worn by "the kid" to Jackson's Chaplin character. Pieces include two nearly identical sweaters, a pair of brown wool trousers with suspenders, white cotton socks, a page boy cap, and a pair of leather boots. Michael Bush recalls that Jackson handed both him and photographer Steve Whitsitt an image of Chaplin from the film and told them he wanted to create that same image. Categories: Michael Jackson
