A marigold polka dot late 19th century style dress worn by Shirley Booth as Dolly "Gallagher" Levi in The Matchmaker (Paramount, 1958). The film is based on Thornton Wilder's play of the same title, which was also the basis for Hello , Dolly ! (20th Century, 1969). The dress has a fitted boned bodice, low waistline, draped apron, and bustle and is embellished with decorative ebony trim and velvet bows. Costume design by Edith Head. Previously attributed as being a costume for Geraldine Page in Summer and Smoke (Paramount, 1961). Accompanied by two black and white images. Previously exhibited: The Valley Hunt Club for the book launch of Edith Head : The Fifty Year Career of Hollywood's Greatest Costume Designer , 2010.
