Gibson Epiphone B. B. King "Lucille" in ebony, serial number 1116017, with a laminated maple body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard and gold hardware. Signed in silver marker by B.B. King. This guitar was owned and played by Mr. King. As the now famous story goes, in 1949 King was playing a juke joint when a fight overturned a bucket of burning kerosene. King safely escaped and realized his guitar was still trapped inside so he went back into the fire to retrieve his guitar, a Gibson acoustic. Two people died in the blaze. He later learned the fight was between two men over a woman named Lucille. He has called his guitar Lucille since, as King puts it, to remind himself never to do a thing like that again.
