An official document of appointment signed by William Seward, Secretary of State under Andrew Johnson (previous Secretary of State to President Abraham Lincoln), signed on December 11, 1865, appointing Hugh Judson Kilpatrick minister to Chile. Kilpatrick is the great-grandfather of Gloria Vanderbilt and the great-great-grandfather of Anderson Cooper. The document reads in part "Major Judson Kilpatrick Envoy Extrordinary and Minister plenipotentiary of the United States to the Republic of Chile is now proceeding thither accompanied by his suite."
