DAVID HOCKNEY British, b. 1937 RAVEL'S GARDEN WITH NIGHT GLOW (v.II) Acrylic on paper 11 by 8 1/2 inches A painted set design executed by David Hockney in association with the New York Metropolitan Opera production of "L'Enfant et les Sortilèges" (The Child and The Spells), which featured music by Ravel and a libretto by the French novelist Colette. The painting depicts a scene in the opera where the young child is transported into a nightmare world inhabited by bats, dragonflies and other creatures who are vengeful of the young boy's cruel behavior. A nearly identical version was used to illustrate one of the posters for the 1983 Hockney exhibit showcasing his theatre designs, "Hockney Paints the Stage."
