An Egyptian style prop goblet used in the epic motion picture Cleopatra (20th Century, 1963) starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The goblet was custom made for use on the production and is one of a limited number cast for use on the film. The goblet is constructed out of fiberglass with gold metallic leaf on the exterior with hand applied simulated gemstones of assorted colors. The goblet is one of several seen on the dining tables in Cleopatra’s royal barge during the scene where she throws a magnificent feast in Tarsus for Caesar’s general Marc Antony (played by Richard Burton). Metal “Hero” versions of this goblet were used prominently by Taylor and Burton throughout the scene as Cleopatra and Antony dine together. A “Hero” version of this cup can be seen in front of Burton and Taylor on the April 13, 1962, cover of LIFE magazine and also in additional promotional images showing Taylor and/or Burton on the set of the film. Critics praised Cleopatra , and the film received four Academy Awards in 1964: Best Special Visual Effects, Best Costume Design (Color), Best Cinematography (Color), and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Color). Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, a copy of the magazine and a copy of the film. 7 by 6 1/4 inches Categories: Cleopatra
