Retna's use of photography as a backdrop for his elegant typographic text is present throughout his oeuvre. The merging of photography with his graffiti style of paint intertwines fashion and street art and as such the model becomes enhanced through the lens of graffiti and only through that prism can her body be seen. Seen through this retina, the viewer is able to glean a deeper meaning behind the hieroglyphics. When asked if this letters have verbal context, Retna has said, “There is. It could be a poem, it could be just stuff that I’m thinking about, for me it’s just a very meditative process; I’m just having a conversation with myself. Sometimes I allow the music to influence what I'm writing. […] They all say something.” Another version of Sonia was used on the cover of Juxtapoz Magazine in 2010.
