Ilmari Tapiovaara - armchair

Thonet Finland, 1947 birch, leather 21½ w x 26 d x 28½ h in (55 x 66 x 72 cm)
Designed for the Museum of Modern Art Low Cost Furniture Exhibition in 1948. The chair is shown in Prize Designs for Modern Furniture, by Edgar Kaufmann, Jr. In the text, Kaufmann writes that of the many Knock-down chairs presented in the competition, Tapiovaara's showed the clearest understanding of factory procedures and shipping problems.
