Tibetan or Chinese, 17th/18th century. A finely cast gilt and polychrome bronze Siddhartha Gautama Buddha seated in padmusana holding the Bhumisparsha mudra, the figure depicted seated on a lotus throne with right hand extended over knee with palm inward and fingers grazing the throne and the left hand held with palm upright in his lap with thumb touching index finger forming the shape of a conch (Buddha uses this gesture to summon all beings to Nirvana), his upright palm and both foot soles with cast dharma wheels, his golden robe open at chest to reveal a Wan symbol, the figure with closed meditative eyes, third eye to forehead, and the form of a jewel nestled on forehead within knotted hair. Sculpture to a later veneered block pedestal. Overall approximate height 56.5", sculpture height 28.5", width 19", depth 12.5". Provenance: Hastings House Antiques, Connecticut, whereby acquired by a Private Collection, Atlanta, Georgia, in a private sale on November 20, 1989.
