Includes a turtle motif carved gourd on a metal pole attached to a wooden base; signed to bottom "Leoncio Veli Peru"; measures approximately 10-1/2" tall, 4-5/8" wide and 8-1/4" long; also includes a tribal leader gourd attached to a pole and wooden base; signed to bottom "Artesano Leoncio Veli Peru"; measures approximately 13-1/2" tall and 5" in diameter; both in Good condition. Leoncio Veli and his family are well-known artisans from Peru. Veli's works are in the collection of the University of British Columbia's Anthropology Museum, among others. He has been creating etched gourds his entire life and has passed the tradition on to his children and grandchildren. He starts with an ordinary dried gourd and uses a fine chisel to carve intricate designs. He then passes a smoldering wooden stick over the surface to create a variation in the colors.
