Houdini, Harry. Schlitz Brewery Challenge to Houdini. Dated March 4th, 1912 and typed on Schlitz letterhead from Norfolk Virginia. The message states, “We challenge you to allow four of our employees to fill that tank of yours with SCHLITZ Beer, and if you accept…our men will be there at your disposal with the required amount of beverage.” One 4to sheet. Dampstained and soiled. Considering the fact that Houdini was a teetotaler, this challenge seems at once hilarious and perilous. One wonders if the “tank” mentioned is a reference to the Water Torture Cell or the Milk Can escape.
