De Barcsy, Nicu. Nicu De Barcsy souvenir pocket mirror. American, ca. 1915. Round mirror bearing a portrait of the midget magician in what is, presumably, an F.O.E. costume. Text reads, “Smallest Perfect Eagle Man on Earth No. 1342 F.O.E./Baron Captain Nicu De Barcsy Born February 28th 1885.” 58mm diameter. Not listed in Forgaard/Sperber. Only known example. Baron Nicu De Barcsy, Hungarian by birth, moved to America with his family in 1903. Both of his parents worked in the circus. His mother was a bearded lady and his father was a strong man (he stood 6’ 3” and weighed some 400 pounds). De Barcsy worked as an escape artist, miraculously releasing himself from handcuffs and stocks a la Houdini. He eventually settled in Drummond, Oklahoma where he lived until his death in 1976.
