“Lohengrin-Tannhauser” Playing Cards. Maker unknown, ca. 1880. 52. Double-ended courts, beautifully lithographed, most likely meant to depict characters from Wagner’s operas Lohengrin and Tannhauser. Rare. NM. The country of origin and the maker of this pack are shrouded in mystery. The deck may be of German, French, or Dutch origin, and could be attributed to Lenssen, Daveluy or even possibly Van Genechten. Pgs. 152/153 of the Daveluy book shows a deck with identical suit signs.
