680. Mutoscope Reel: “An Execution By Hanging,” or “Execution Of Negro At County Jail, Jacksonville, FL.” Subject 687, Serial No. 37. Jacksonville, Fla.: American Mutoscope & Biograph Company, 1898. Perhaps the only motion picture of its day that captured a genuine execution by hanging. It was taken in the courtyard of the Jacksonville County Jail, and shows the execution of an unknown man. The prisoner is seen mounting the platform accompanied by clergymen. The executioner adjusts a black cap and the noose about the prisoner's neck. The trap is touched and the body shoots through the air and hangs quivering at the end of the rope. Reel complete and in used but good condition, stored in its original wooden case.
