Caulfield, James. Portraits, Memoirs and Characters of Remarkable Persons. London, 1794-1820. Four volumes collecting varying editions of these seminal works. In handsome matching quarter leather over marbled boards with marbled endpapers and banded spines. Illustrated with 326 engraved plates of remarkable persons dating from "the reign of Edward the Third" onward. Spines and extremities rubbed, some light foxing, but overall good condition. A desirable set, and uncommonly found together. Toole-Stott 1350. Among the personalities profiled in these volumes are Isaac Fawkes, de Manfre the water spouter, Daniel Defoe, witch hunters, dwarves, fat men, musicians poets, authors and criminals. A contemporary note on the ffep states, "This is a quite complete copy; which is very rare. It contains the 2 original volumes published in 1794-5…[and] The 3 volumes published in 1813 which comprised the former 2 volumes, with several very rare additional portraits; and the 4 concluding volumes published in 1819.
