Netherlandish, 17th century. A Renaissance Period rectangular carved oak relief panel depicting the Disputation or The Finding in the Temple, an episode in the early life of Jesus depicted in the Gospel of Luke where Christ lingered in the Temple as his parents headed home and upon their return found him in discussion with elders. The panel carving depicting the adolescent Jesus at center with Mary and Joseph seated at his sides holding gestures of praise and support as the child peers upward at two gesticulating elders in Jewish dress set before double arches, the scene surrounded by four sections of ornately carved scrolls, the carving in relief with some areas of fully rounded modeling. Approximately 13.25" x 9.5" x 1". Provenance: acquired by the Estate of Dr. Woody Cobbs and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia from B. I. Howard Antiques, Somerset, England, in a private sale on August 18, 1997.
