German, 16th century. Medieval hand carved, gilt lime wood and polychrome figural relief sculpture depicting a standing male knight (possibly a portrayal of St. George) with long dark curled hair wearing armor holding spear and shield, remnants of polychrome and gilt throughout. Reverse inscribed with "254". possibly in reference to earlier inventory. Approximate height 23.3", width 9.3", depth 1.7". Provenance: Christie's, New York, Important European Furniture, Works of Art, Ceramics, Tapestries and Carpets, May 17-18, 2005 as Lot 332 whereby acquired by Dr. Woody and Mrs. Honor Cobbs, Atlanta, Georgia.
