Embroidered Gauze Marriage Hanging, China, 19th century, depicting pairs of mandarin ducks and ribbon tailed birds perched on rocks, branches, and swimming in a pond, surrounded by peaches and peonies, bordered by leaves and flowers, 64 x 20 in. Provenance: Descended in the family of Dr. Marshall Hertig, an internationally noted medical entomologist who conducted research on disease bearing insects at the Peking Union Medical College, from 1923-1928, his wife Edwina Smiley Hertig, and their son Bruce Allerton Hertig to the present owner.
