Federal Carved and Inlaid Mahogany Double Tambour Desk, Boston, c. 1805-10, in three sections, the top section with reeded tambour doors opening to shelves, the middle section with contrasting veneer tambour opening to compartments and drawers, and projecting lower section with fold-down writing surface above three crossbanded drawers joining engaged reeded columns and shaped skirt joining reeded tapering legs, ht. 63 3/4, wd. 38 1/2, dp. 20 3/4 in. Literature: Illustrated and discussed in John and Thomas Seymour: Cabinetmakers in Boston 1794-1816, by Vernon Stoneman, Boston, Massachusetts, 1959, p. 125, fig. 60. Note: There are several early inscriptions on the top of the middle section, including the name "Henry Norton" and the letters "Vt," the name "Henry" again, and the initials "EB." The backs of the long drawers are numbered in red pencil from bottom to top "1," "2," and "3."
