David Johnson (American, 1827-1908) Lake George Monogrammed and dated "DJ [overlapping] 1870" l. r., identified on a label from Vose Galleries of Boston affixed to the frame backing. Oil on canvas, 10 3/4 x 17 in. (27.3 x 43.3 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Lined, multiple pinpoint-sized dots of retouch, stable craquelure. Estimate $10,000-15,000 Framed dimensions are 20 3/4 x 27 x 2 1/2 inches. Damage to l.l. corner of the frame. Work is also inscribed "Lake George 1870 David Johnson" in pencil in a later hand on brown paper tape on the stretcher. Frame with an auction-style sticker inscribed "Wadsworth Atheneum" in ink. Frame backing with a green auction -style sticker "LOT NO/ H0654/049." No additional condition issues to report. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
