Piercy Roberts (British, active c. 1785-1824) Admiral Lord Nelson K.B. and the Victory of the Nile Published by George Riley, London, 1799, identified and titled in the plate. Etching and engraving with hand-coloring on paper, sheet size 16 3/8 x 10 7/16 in. (41.5 x 26.5 cm), matted, unframed. Condition: Sheet trimmed laid down on secondary paper support, hinged to back mat in two places on the reverse of the support. N.B. The portrait of Nelson is after Lemuel Francis Abbott and the sea battle is after Francis Chesham. Lettered below image with the title, "On the 1h. 2d. and 3d. of Augt. 1798." The sea battle of the English and French fleets depicts the moment of the explosion of the French Admiral's ship, L'Orient.
