Frederick J. Swinton (American, Probably 1819-1877) At the Watering Hole, A Hudson River View Signed "F.J Swinton" l.r. Watercolor on paper, 9 1/2 x 13 in., matted, in a gilt frame. Condition: Minor toning, small spot of soiling/discoloration in the sky. Note: Though this artist is not now well-known, he was a member of the Hudson River School, and is mentioned in the New York Farmer & Gardener in 1836 (as a 17-year-old), and in the New York Mirror in 1837, which cites his paintings of a horse's head and other animals at the National Academy of Design. His dates are sometimes incorrectly listed as 1821-1910; according to census records they may more likely be 1819-1877. Estimate $200-300 Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
