Attributed to John Frederick Herring Sr. (British, 1795-1865) Farm Scene Signed or inscribed "J.F. Herring Sen" l.r., titled on a typed gummed label affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 20 3/8 x 28 1/4 in. (51.5 x 71.5 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure, with an area of tenting to sky u.c. and along left side. Provenance: Estate of T.A. Abbott (per label on the stretcher). N.B. Although the consignor does not have provenance beyond their own family, an online search for T.A. Abbott leads to information indicating Abbott was an administrator and faculty member at Culver-Stockton College. In the 1880s and early 1890s, Abbott pastored local congregations in Missouri, and from 1886 to 1910 he was the corresponding secretary of the Missouri Christian Missionary Society. He died in 1914. His descendants established the T.A. Abbott Award through a gift to the Higher Education and Leadership Ministries (HELM) of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in his memory. Estimate $3,000-5,000 Framed dimensions are 24 1/4 x 32 1/4 x 2 in. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
