Alfred Walter Bayes (British, 1832-1909) Thwarted. Signed "AWBayes" l.r., identified and titled on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 24 x 36 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Puncture with surrounding paint loss to center, approximate 1 1/4 in. paint loss, small area of loss near u.l. edge, possible small area of retouch near l.r. corner. Estimate $20-200 Small puncture to c.r. edge in the side of the garden stairs with minor surrounding paint loss. Small pucture, perhaps a nail hole, in tree trunk at center left edge. Canvas stencil from P. Shea, Tottenham Court Road, London, on the reverse. Patrick Shea (1839-1911) was in business at this address 1875-1882 Framed dimensions are 35 5/8 x 47 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.
