Lois Gross Smiley (American, 1923-2019) Two Framed Works on Paper: Untitled Abstract and Pond V. Abstract signed and dated "Smiley '87" l.l., Pond signed "Smiley" l.r. and signed, titled, and dated "SMILEY/...'91" on an unattributed label affixed to the frame backing. Mixed media including watercolor on paper, sizes to 15 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. Condition: Deckled edges, gentle rippling, minor creases to corners, Pond with pale toning/staining to edges, floated in frames, not examined out of frames. Provenance: The estate of Lois Smiley. Smiley was born in New York, where she eventually studied with Rufino Tamayo and Vaclav Vytlacil. Her artwork followed in their traditions of abstract expressionism with a focus on figural and landscape painting. She taught drawing and painting in New York and later in the Boston area.
