Two Gabbeh Rugs, Mid to late 20th century, ht. 56, 36, wd. 28, 23 in. Provenance: The estate of Lois Smiley. Smiley was born in New York, where she eventually studied with Rufino Tamayo and Vaclav Vytlacil. Her artwork followed in their traditions of abstract expressionism with a focus on figural and landscape painting. She taught drawing and painting in New York and later in the Boston area. Over her lifetime, Smiley amassed a collection of important modern decorative arts including Tiffany glass, Wegner, and Nakashima furniture, much of which is included in this sale. Estimate $200-400 Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
