Martin Lewis (American, 1881-1962) Stoops in Snow, 1930, final state of two, edition of 115 (McCarron, 89). Signed "Martin Lewis-" in pencil l.r., signed within the plate. Drypoint and sand ground on paper, plate size 9 15/16 x 14 15/16 in. (25.0 x 37.9 cm), framed. Condition: White cloth tape along all edges, image gently light-struck, sheet gently rippled. N.B. Lewis is best known for his evocative views of New York City and the regular people who live there. The scene here was originally titled Stoops in Snow - West Forties and depicts the comings and goings of men and women as they brave the driving wind and snow of a New York blizzard. Although the subjects are the people and architecture, as is often the case in Lewis's prints, an underlying theme is how these elements are affected by light and weather. Estimate $15,000-25,000 The sheet measures about 12 5/8 x 17 3/8 in (the upper edge may be uneven, but with the tape covering all edges it is hard to be certain). The sheet is rippled, implying that though the edges are taped to the backing mat the sheet is not laid down. A newspaper dated December 8, 1930, is included between the backing mat and the frame backing as originally framed. Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging.
