Spanish Colonial School, 19th Century Hyacinth Holding a Monstrance and Statue of Virgin and Child Inscribed indistinctly, perhaps over an older inscription, along the bottom edge of the composition. Oil on canvas, 18 x 13 in. (46.0 x 33.0 cm), in a carved and embellished frame. Condition: Patch reinforcement, probable old retouch, paint losses, creasing, varnish inconsistencies. N.B. Hyacinth was a Dominican friar, canonized in 1594, who became a missionary to Poland and neighboring lands. He is credited with numerous miracles, including one illustrated here. When his church was attacked by Tartar hordes, Hyacinth snatched the monstrance and heavy statue of the Virgin and bore them to safety, walking with impunity across the River Dnieper. Estimate $300-500 Items may have wear and tear, imperfections, or the effects of aging. Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
