"Reubens Peale" Watercolor Memorial, c. 1865, depicting a woman mourning at a monument consisting of an urn on a square pedestal inscribed "Sacred/to the memory/of/REUBENS PEALE/OB July 17th/1865/AE 81 yr 2 mo.," with finely rendered willow, buildings with tall poplar trees, and a striped green lawn, eglomise mat with an oval aperture, housed in a gilt molded frame, ht. 11 1/4, wd. 8 1/2 in. Note: Reubens Peale, the fourth son of Charles Willson Peale, was a director of Peale's Museum in Baltimore, and later opened his own museum in New York wich became the New York Museum of Natural Histrory and Science. In the 1850s he painted still lifes and landscapes. His portrait at seventeen years of age where he is seen with a potted geranium was painted by Rembrandt Peale in 1801.
