Dartmoor Massacre Watercolor Memorial, America, c. 1815, a large urn atop a monument inscribed "IN/MEMORY/OF THE/MASSACRE/AT/DARTMOOR/APRIL 6/1815," flanked by a man and woman in mourning, the man in a sailor's jacket, below United States flags and with willows in the background, ht. 7, wd. 8 1/2 in. Provenance: Skinner, early 1970s. Note: Accompanied by supporting documents, including a 1925 copy of a letter by Frank B. Dowst, Salem, Massachusetts, attesting to the capture of his great grandfather in 1814 and his being sent to Dartmoor Prison, and whose relative (his great-great-grandfather) was a privateer in the Revolutionary War. Also included are several letters of Dowst family genealogy correspondence and an 1845 printed diagram of the Dartmoor Prison as it was on the day of the massacre. Estimate $800-1,200 Sheet is laid down on a thin paper backing. There is an area of paper restoration in the area in the steps below the monument, repaired tear along the right edge and a repaired tear from the top extending through the urn. Paper is tone.
