Pen and Watercolor Fraktur Reward of Merit for Peter Schern, Pennsylvania, dated 1792, a pair of central opposing birds and leafy tulip vines above a German inscription and leafy tulip bottom block, in a black-painted molded frame, image ht. 8, wd. 6 1/2 in. Provenance: Collection of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch. Literature: Illustrated and decribed in 101 American Primitive Water Colors and Pastels from the Collection of Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch (Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art, 1966), pp. 25, 119. Estimate $1,500-2,500 paper intact but affixed to a card at several points - not glued down fully. frame is period. Minor tears and creases which are hard to see, and can't be seen from the back of the paper because it is affixed to the stabilizing card. Dark pigment has bled/oxidized. Glass appears newer.
