Jewell, John (1522-1571) The Works. London: Printed by [Eliot's Court Press for] Iohn Norton, printer to the Kings most excellent Maiestie, 1609. First edition, folio, later boards, title page printed within woodcut border, rebacked, some paper repairs to preliminaries and final leaf, 12 1/4 x 8 in. Jewel served as Bishop of Salisbury under Elizabeth I. His 1562 Apology of the Church of England was the defining document and statement of faith for the Church of England under Elizabeth I, answering the challenges of the Catholic Church against Protestant thought.
