Carved Mahogany Double-pedestal Extension Dining Table, possibly New York, c. 1820-30, the top with reeded edge and rounded corners, composed of two ends and a leaf which is supported by pullout slides, the ends on turned posts issuing four acanthus carved and molded legs ending in cast brass cap casters, refinished, (imperfections), ht. 28, wd. 51, overall lg. 89 1/2 in. Provenance: Purchased from C.W. Lyon, Inc., New York, in 1945. According to Lyon's bill of sale, it was acquired from Gertrude Cobb of Westhampton, Long Island. Estimate $400-600 There is evidence of old insect damage to the secondary wood (possibly maple) top supports, under the veneer. There are doweled and Dutchmen reinforcements to the underside of the tops, and each of those has separated somewhat. The hardware appears original. The leaf supports are slightly warped and one is cracked, and for that reason the table sags a little in the center, but it is still quite stable. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition requests can be obtained via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone to the appropriate gallery location (Boston/617.350.5400 or Marlborough/508.970.3000).
