Turned and Polychrome Painted Barber Pole, America, second half 19th century, ball finial above red, white, and blue painted post accentuated with stars, on a stepped blue-painted square base, old weathered surface, ht. 89 in. Provenance: A Cornwall, Connecticut, Collector. Estimate $2,000-4,000 The barber pole is in nice condition. The paint is certainly old, and in the areas of loss, only bare wood is visible, so it is our opinion that this is the first paint. In some of the areas where the paint has chipped away, an effort has been made to mitigate the appearance of losses, by way of a thin application of paint to complete stars, for example. In addition, there is a full-height crack which has been filled with 1/4 inch wide strips of wood and only partially repainted. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. Condition requests can be obtained via email (lot inquiry button) or by telephone to the appropriate gallery location (Boston/617.350.5400 or Marlborough/508.970.3000). Any condition statement given, as a courtesy to a client, is only an opinion and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Skinner Inc. shall have no responsibility for any error or omission.
