Gold Massachusetts Hanging Ball Badge Named to Lieutenant George L. Lawrence, 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, c. 1863, red, white, and blue woven ribbon with a gold shield engraved "1st REGT./MASS VOLS," a suspended gold minie ball with the seal of Massachusetts on one side, and a blue enameled plate with the battles that the 1st Massachusetts fought, engraved along the rim of the bullet "Lieut. G. L. Lawrence," with gold pin on back, ht. 3 1/4 in. Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio. Note: George L. Lawrence, from Fitchburg, Massachusetts, enlisted in May, 1861 as a corporal and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1862. He served through the war and was part of the 3rd Army Corps provost guard. Estimate $2,000-3,000 In very good condition with a small amount of blue enamel loss.
