17th Century Eucharist Bread Iron, France, scroll-tipped tapering handles terminating in a pair of iron plates, one side engraved with stylized hearts and a coat of arms of France and Navarre, the other plate engraved with a cross, stylized heart, and marked "Iesus Maria" and dated "1686," lg. 34 in. Provenance: Calmels Cohen, Andre Breton Collection, April 14th 2003, Lot 3415. Literature: Codes & Symbols of European Tools, pp. 93-98. Note: This bread iron was forged for a 1686 mass for the Semenon family in the village of Genis, France. Provenance: The property of Laurent Adamowicz.
