Jusepe de Ribera (Spanish, 1591-1652) Saint Jerome Hearing the Trumpet of the Last Judgment, 1621, only state (Bartsch, 5; Brown, 4). Monogrammed and dated within the plate. Etching on laid paper with watermark of a fleur-de-lis in a circle, sheet size 12 11/16 x 9 7/16 in., matted, unframed. Condition: Trimmed just within the plate mark, thinned spots to verso, minor rubs to image u.r. Provenance: The collection of Professor and Mrs. Jonathan Brown, Princeton. Estimate $20-200 The thinned spots are all over the verso, presumably from the removal of some sort of backing.
