DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, EARLY 20TH CENTURY Height 23 inches Provenance: May D&F Co. Acquired From the Above by the Denver Art Museum, 1964. Minor marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions and chips throughout, consistent with age. Old damage and loss to center of forehead. Old loss to groin which trickles to feet. Apparent and intentional drill holes on bottom of both feet, possibly for a stand. Splitting of wood down reverse of head, also made during production and hammering of nails. In black ink on reverse of proper right foot: '396-QA-P.' Old inventory number in white on reverse of proper right foot: '1964.292.'
