Charles Fasoldt Single-arm Gravity Escapement Regulator, Rome or Albany, New York, c. 1860, the ebonized iron and glass case surmounted by a walnut cornice, all resting on a molded transition and base plinth, front door opens for access to the movement, weight, and pendulum, the rear is a walnut panel, the glass roman numeral dial marked C. Fasoldt/1890 with delicate moon hour and minute hands and brass bezel, the unmarked footed movement attaches to the backboard-mounted mirrored iron bracket with two tie-downs, knurled nuts for plate attachment, maintaining power mounted on the great wheel, five-wheel train with single escape wheel, jeweled locking arm and pendulum stirrup with beat setting adjustment, all powered by a cylindrical brass compounded weight and regulated by a mercury-filled, temperature-compensating steel cylinder and hollow steel pendulum rod, ht. 67 1/2 in. Note: Evidence suggests that this regulator was a work in progress for Fasoldt. It was possibly an inverted dual escape wheel type, with the maker altering it in the 1880s to a gravity escapement. A technical description is available. Please see Lot 70 for biographical information on Charles Fasoldt.
