American, c. 1893. "The Rivals", hand colored etching after the painting by Walter Dendy Sadler (English, 1854-1923), etching by Eugene Gaujean (French, 1850-1900), published in New York in 1893 by M. Knoedler & Co. Etching depicts an elegant woman seated on a bench in a garden setting with refined rival suitors on either side of her, all surrounded by lush flowering plants and trees. Inscribed below image lower left "painted by Dendy Sadler", and lower right "etched by Gaujean". Framed 25.5" x 30.5", unframed sight size 17" x 21.5".
