Beechey, Frederick William (1796-1856) Narrative of a Voyage to the Pacific and Beering's Strait to Co-operate with the Polar Expeditions. London: Colburn & Bentley, 1831. Two large quarto volumes, the Admiralty edition, on large paper illustrated with fourteen plates and three maps in volume one, and nine plates in volume two, errata slip; bound in half leather, marbled boards, spines a bit faded, some light edge wear, plates and maps moderately foxed, 10 1/4 x 8 in. Although Franklin's group was forced to turn back due to bad weather, Beechey went on to visit Pitcairn Island (meeting the last survivor of the Bounty mutiny), Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, Macao, Okinawa, and the coast of California. The maps show Beechey's route and the northwest coast of Alaska. He also includes a vocabulary of Western Eskimo words. Provenance: The Estate of David Spinney.
