Jackson, Andrew (1767-1845) Autograph Note Signed as President, 22 August 1831. Single sheet of wove paper, inscribed on one page. To John Henry Eaton (1790-1856), stating that he will not be able to take a trip of the canal to visit him. Old folds, some marginal paper loss, staining, 7 1/4 x 5 in. "My Dr. Sir, It will not be in my power to take the trip up the canal tomorrow. My engagements are such that I cannot leave here for a day or two. I regret this the more, as on this excursion, I would have the pleasure of your company. Your friend, Andrew Jackson" Eaton served under Jackson as Secretary of War from 1829 until 18 June 1831, when he was forced to resign as a result of the Petticoat Affair. This Washington, D.C. society scandal centered around rumors and innuendoes regarding Eaton's wife Peggy.
